About Helen Newland

Helen Newland practises in the firm’s energy law group in Toronto. She is recognised as a leading energy practitioner, with particular expertise in energy project development and utility regulation. Helen has over 25 years of experience as an energy lawyer in both the public and private sectors, including four years as counsel to the National Energy Board. She has acted as counsel to some of North America’s leading developers of energy projects – including Enbridge Inc, MidAmerican Transmission, Renewable Energy Systems and Capital Power – in connection with the development, acquisition and disposition of power generation and electricity transmission and distribution projects. Helen has also acted for large Canadian and US financial institutions in connection with the provision of credit facilities to energy projects. She has specific expertise in the areas of energy project agreements, regulatory approvals, environmental assessments and permitting, and Aboriginal consultation. Helen has contributed to several industry publications and has given a number of presentations.
