is a Partner and head of the Energy practice group of the firm. His practice covers project development and finance, permits, M&A’s and Joint Ventures, Power Purchase Agreements, resolution of disputes before the public services regulator, representation before the public entity on environmental affairs, among others. With almost 20 years’ background in corporate law, including project finance matters, Mr. Varela’s experience includes major areas of infrastructure projects, including transportation, ports and energy. His practice focuses on advising clients involved in the development, construction and operation of energy projects, including hydro, wind, LNG and solar projects, from the permitting process to land acquisition, up to and including ongoing operational issues once the projects are fully commissioned. He also regularly advises financial institutions in project finance transactions, including both syndicated loan facilities and securities offerings before the Panama Stock Exchange, either for purposes of developing new power generation facilities or restructuring existing corporate debt. Mr. Varela has also served as speaker at conferences and workshops related to the energy market in the country, to discuss the investment needs of the energy sector and new energy projects in Panama.
