In April 2023, a promising development emerged: the National Alliance for Artificial Intelligence (Alianza Nacional de Inteligencia Artificial, or ANIA) was created by a Mexican senator and a multidisciplinary group of experts. ANIA aims to strengthen the Mexican AI ecosystem and establish a legal foundation for future AI regulations. Its success could significantly shape how Mexico approaches AI in the coming years.
Overall, Mexico’s AI regulation landscape is in a nascent stage, but there are signs of movement towards a more comprehensive framework. Developments such as ANIA suggest a future with clearer rules for responsible AI development and deployment in Mexico.
As can be observed, there is a growing acknowledgement of the necessity to establish local regulations, but also a regional AI-related framework; however, the region still grapples with significant challenges. It requires a symphony of international co-operation, a collective effort to navigate the delicate balance between fostering innovation and instituting effective control measures. Negotiating geopolitical disparities further complicates this endeavour, requiring diplomatic finesse to bridge gaps and cultivate a shared understanding of the complex interaction between technological progress and regulatory governance.
